Helen Chapman qualified in 1981 from University College London and worked for many years in the Community Dental Service. In 1991 she gained an MSc with distinction in Dental Public Health researching into dental fear.

In 2005 she gained a postgraduate certificate in cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy (CBT) from the University of Derby.
She is a registered specialist in paediatric dentistry but treats adults as well, her course in CBT being focussed on them. She is currently studying for a PhD in psychology at Royal Holloway College, University of London.
Helen has taught other dentists about dental fear on postgraduate courses since 1997. She worked for many years with a consultant psychologist, Nick Kirby-Turner, pioneering the use of CBT with dental phobics. She and Nick have published articles in scientific journals on the treatment of dental fear. They are about to have their first book published on the subject. Helen gives workshops on dental fear at the Anxiety Disorders Conference which is organised by a group of charities every year.
In 1998, Helen was the first ‘Dentist of the Year’ for her work on dental phobia. Her teams were awarded the ‘Team of the Year’ Award.
